Can you drink coffee during pregnancy?

Pregnancy comes with a large range of lifestyle changes to ensure the health and development of the growing baby. One common question that we get asked as midwives all the time is “can I have coffee during pregnancy?”. This topic is one that has sparked many debates over the years, with most health professionals advising caution when it comes to consuming too much caffeine during pregnancy. In this blog, we delve into the effects of caffeine in pregnancy and explore the República Organic Coffee Decaf range as a potential alternative for expectant mothers. Information in this blog is of general nature and should not replace specific medical advice from your midwife or obstetrician.

What is caffeine?

Caffeine is a natural stimulant that is found in a variety of drinks, including coffee, soft drinks, energy drinks, tea and chocolate. Caffeine can also be found in some prescription and over-the-counter medications. Coffee remains the most common source of caffeine in diets worldwide.

Caffeine during pregnancy

Excessive caffeine exposure during pregnancy is described as an intake greater than 300mg/day. Excessive caffeine intake during pregnancy has been shown to be associated with infertility, recurrent miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, fetal growth restriction, birth defects, pregnancy-induced hypertension and childhood behavioural concerns (Wikoff et al., 2017).

Evidence suggests that small amounts of caffeine is safe during pregnancy. In Australia, it is recommended that the maximum amount of caffeine is 200mg per day for a pregnant woman. The exact amount of caffeine in each drink varies, however as an estimate 200mg is the same as:

  • 1 cup of strong espresso style coffee or
  • 3 cups of instant coffee or
  • 4 cups of medium strength tea or
  • 4 cups of hot chocolate or
  • 4 cans of soft drinks

It is advised to avoid sports and energy drinks during pregnancy.
