Other coffee pods that are made from plastic or aluminium often end up in landfill. Even if they’re technically recyclable, pods usually need to be sent to a special facility for processing and sadly most coffee drinkers will choose the convenience of just tossing their pods in the bin. In landfill, plastic coffee pods take a really long long time to break down. Have you ever had a relationship drag on a bit long? Well forget the 7 year itch, if you’re devoted to your regular plastic pods you’re looking at a 500 year itch. Yikes.

So how do we do it?
Republica Organic capsules are produced from Food Grade, BPA-free biodegradable plastic. The plastic is oil-based polyethylene with a special additive called d2w (very high tech) which renders the plastic ‘oxo-biodegradable’.

Oxo-biodegration is degradation caused and accelerated by oxygen - no chemicals or fancy processing necessary. As long as the plastic is placed into general waste anywhere with oxygen in the air (aka anywhere on planet earth), then you’re sorted.

It only takes the capsule approximately 730 days to biodegrade - that's around the same amount of time it takes for an orange peel to decompose!
