That's right, you heard correctly - República Organic's coffee capsules are 100% biodegradable. How is that possible, you ask? Well, here's your answer.
Our capsules are produced from Food Grade BPA free biodegradable plastic. The plastic is oil-based polyethylene with a special additive called d2w (very cool technology!) which renders the plastic ‘oxo-biodegradable’.
Oxo-biodegration is degradation caused and accelerated by oxygen. To be fully oxo-biodegradable, the plastic with d2w has to pass all EU specifications and requirements - República Organic holds that certification. The plastic is injection moulded to form the capsules you place in your machine.
They can be placed in your general waste to decompose at an accelerated rate. It only takes the capsule approximately 730 days to biodegrade* - that's around the same amount of time it takes for an orange peel to decompose!
