You’ve probably heard all about superfoods but you might be wondering what exactly they are. Well, superfoods are basically nutrient dense foods that are considered to be particularly beneficial for your health and well-being. Like blueberries and avocados.
We have an incredible organic superfood range at República Organic, packed full of these (kind of) magical superfoods. Here are our favourites and here’s why we think you should get them in your gob...
1. Barley Grass
Barley grass is the leaf of the barley plant. It’s packed with chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. It’s been known to be a natural detoxifier and can help lower blood pressure, inflammation and insomnia. It’s also believed that barley grass can promote weight loss. 45% of its make up is protein which means it will keep you super full (hence why it’s great for weight loss).
Wheatgrass refers specifically to the young shoots of the wheat plant. These young shoots have a high concentration of iron, potassium, amino acids, chlorophyll and vitamins A, C and E. Wheat-grass enthusiasts claim they experience energy boosts, better digestion and skin improvements from regular consumption of wheatgrass. If you’re not too keen on taking wheatgrass shots (they do taste a bit like blended grass!) it might be better for you to try República's green superfood mix in a smoothie or juice instead.
Maca is a root vegetable that comes from the same family as the radish. Maca is packed full of minerals including calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Regular consumers of maca have reported increases in libido and there have also been reports of maca assisting with the alleviation of menopausal symptoms. Maca can also clear skin blemishes and mild cases of acne, wahoo!
Chlorella is a type of micro algae that grows in fresh water. It’s nutritionally dense and is also seen as a natural detoxifier. You’ll find it in lots of liver detox powders and it’s been known to assist people who need immune system support. There have also been some supportive studies saying chlorella can help with weight loss. If you’re looking for an easy way to get some chlorella in your diet, República's superfood slimming mix will sort you out.
Spirulina is a micro salt water plant, a bit like seaweed or algae. It’s full of chlorophyll and can assist with digestion if taken regularly. It has thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folate, vitamin B6, C,A, E and K. It also has zinc, amino acids, magnesium and phosphorus. It’s also been proven to increase red blood cell count in seniors and has been reported to assist with relief of arthritis pain. Just add a sneaky teaspoon of República's superfoods detox mix to your morning smoothie to get those extra nutrients. Read more about why República loves spirulina so much here!
Lucuma is a Peruvian fruit that is known as the ‘Gold of the Incas’. It has a creamy and sweet, almost caramel-like, flavour and it’s full of fibre, iron, niacin (B#) and beta-carotene. If you’re trying to cut down on sugar, lucuma is a low glycaemic alternative to sugar because it has a versatile natural sweetness. It’s also shown to have antibiotic and anti-fungal properties. Win-win!
Sounds a bit weird doesn’t it? Baobab is a tangy fruit that grows (not surprisingly) on baobab trees. This nourishing fruit has three times as much vitamin C as oranges and twice as much calcium as milk. República use powdered, non-heat treated, raw baobab in our super food mixes because it’s got a reputation for boosting energy and supporting the immune system.
If that doesn't get you up and searching for ways to get more superfoods into your diet, then we don't know what will! Treat you mind and body to these amazing benefits and check out República Organic's superfood range. Find them at your local Woolworths!
